The advancement in technology has brought about a constant and rapid growth in the industry. However, there are challenges relating to the design and development of the e-learning course, and if care is not taken, it can amount the whole effort into nothing.
With our many years of experience in L&D, we bring to you the common mistakes to avoid while building e-learning courses. Hopefully, they will help you while designing and developing your e-learning courses.
Not understanding your learners
The first mistake to avoid while building e-learning courses is not understanding your target audience. Before jumping into course design, there’s a need for a proper understanding of your target audience. You should understand the following;
● What learning are they craving for?
● Do they have any specific interests?
● What is their experience level?
● Do we have any visually impaired individuals among them?
All of these and many more are what you need to take time to understand before starting with building your e-learning course. That’ll help you create an efficient learning experience for your readers, and build a strong relationship with them.
Lack of responsive design
The e-learning industry has gone beyond how it used to be years ago. The advancement in technology has brought new models and technology to the industry. And as such, all L&D professionals are supposed to shift to the new technologies, to balance their learning program.
In today’s digital age, the number of mobile devices is on a high. Over 66% of the world’s population makes use of mobile devices. That explains why many people carry out different activities on the go, at their convenience. To cater to everybody’s learning requirements, there is a need to develop your LMS to meet all device requirements.
Hence, the need for responsive web designing. With that, it’s easier for your learners to access your course content from any device, including PCs, mobile smartphones, iPad’s, and tablets.
Not clearly defining learning needs and objectives
One of the mistakes to avoid while building your e-learning courses is not defining your learning objective well. Using goals as a roadmap for your e-learning development is very okay, however, you should ensure that they’re clearly stated by defining your learning objective.
As an instructor or SMEs, not sharing every part of your learning objective with your development team can ruin your learning objective. To avoid that, make prior research to know what your learners want, only then can you make it a road-map for your e-learning development.
Improper usage of images and graphics
Integrating graphics and images into your e-learning course is very okay. It helps to paint a clearer understanding of a course, and also helps to boost learners’ retention ability.
However, adding too much graphics in your e-learning, adding low quality or irrelevant images can be distracting, and less motivating to learners. So, ensure that you make it a part of you to use images/graphics that are concerning your subject matter.
Presenting an unchallenged assessment
One of the mistakes to avoid while building e-learning courses is not creating challenging assessments for your learners. It’ll be hard to know how they are progressing with your course if no serious assessment is given out.
You can present them with assessment in the form of short quizzes, to help them retain knowledge. Through that, you get to know where they are lacking and which part of your modules they are performing well.
Avoid using too much content in your eLearning
Too much content in e-learning is another mistake to avoid while building e-learning courses. It leads to a cluttered course with so much irrelevant information. So, avoid overfilling the course and the screen, rather than making your content short and precise.
That way, learners get to fully understand the objective of their learning without having to battle with any irrelevant information. Making thorough research to know about your learners is so important, as this is the first step to achieving effective and interactive learning.
Ensure that you keep these mistakes in mind while building your e-learning courses and try as much as possible to avoid them. Do you have any contribution that you’ll like to share with us? Well, share your thoughts in the below comment section!
